Rance – Hikari o Motomete –

Rance – Hikari o Motomete – is a game that was released in Japan for various computer based systems in 1989. The game has not been localized, but in 2008 it was officially re-released as freeware, which was then fan translated, so you can play it in English for free (legally). This game is an RPG, but with detective elements. The premise of the game is about a perverted young man who’s basically a mercenary getting hired to find a girl by the name of Hikari, the one the one mentioned in the game title, for a large sum of money. You also need to help a bartender find his daughter too.
The game is on the short side (only a few hours to beat it) and has a handful of places to explore. The games real game play is in just figuring out what the hell to do and where to go. You’ll have to navigate the different areas, repeatedly check on things or do repeated actions, and really have to think on what to do, almost none of it is hinted to you. These parts are detective like and can be tricky at times but are fun. There’s of course battles but they’re very easy and not very in-depth, I basically just kept clicking which killed the monsters (that are either monster girls, doodles, or warriors) then spawned more, then I healed if needed.

ALCG0005The main character, Rance, is pretty funny because of how much of an ass he is. He does really uncalled for dick moves, only does stuff if he gets paid or laid, and other things. Which leads me to my next point, this game is full of hentai. Lots of the time its because the MC (main character) just thinks he deserves it, to get information, or just for the hell of it. The way you can learn new spells is that you have relations with your friend, Sill, who looks like a big ball of cotton candy. Different order of the actions leads to different results, or no results at all. The sex scenes are mostly like the one I pictured, breasts exposed but the actual penetration is off-screen.

This is a pretty cool game and is interesting for not only its age but the content and large amount of non-battle based detective-like gameplay thrown in the mix. The game’s dialogue isn’t bad either, with lots of comedic stuff added in and unexpected elements and twists.

Some other things of interest
• The game has some glitches, but there’s a .txt file in the download that explains how to fix them. The bugs are all visual, most commonly the graphics turning mostly red.
• You can get a lot of money early on, its recommended you buy good equipment with it.
• You can only have one skill learned at a time, I went with heal
• Be careful! The characters love stealing your money. They’ll lock you in screens where you must buy something, unexpectedly charge for items, and even charge you for not buying something. Thankfully though its very easy to get more money.
• You need to go to a store to level up. Its free and just costs experience points but you do need to go there to level up, don’t forget to do this because some monsters will still some non-redeemed experience points.
• The girl on the cover is not in the game
• Alternate titles include:
– Rance: Quest for Hikari
– ランス -光をもとめて-

Girls und Panzer: Senshado, Kiwamemasu!

Girls und Panzer: Senshado, Kiwamemasu! is a game that was released in 2014 on PS Vita. The game is based on the anime series Girls und Panzer, so it is very recommended that you watch it prior to buying this game. This game has not been localized and is in Japanese. With my current level of Japanese, navigating menus was a breeze but I was pretty lost with most of the dialogue (more on this further in the review). The game is an action 3rd person shooter. The game is not region locked,  a system from any region can play it.

Girls und Panzer is one of my absolute favorite anime in existence so when I saw the announcement that it was getting a game I was full on excite bike. I patiently waited to see if it would get localized, but that was pretty silly to do since a very small amount of games based on anime get localized. So I bought it off Amazon and got the special edition (more on this further in the review). The game met my expectations of a very fun game based on an anime that I love.

The story in the game is the exact same as in the anime, so if you’ve watched it you’ll know whats going on, knowing Japanese isn’t necessary to play this. There is a bunch of little added dialogue while you’re on the battlefield but its not very important but there is a trophy if you can trigger them all (and not skip or have them end, just Google trophy guide for this). You get to do all the battles that happened in the anime series which is really awesome. You also get to play as all the different tanks, each tank has different stats, play differently (some suck and some kick ass), and get a different role (sometimes) and placement when doing missions; you get to play the battles from each tank’s perspective.

Game play consists of driving around a tank on the battlefield and, well, fighting other tanks. The game is 3rd person, you see your whole tank. When using zoom you go into a sniper scope type view. The objectives are pretty obvious because there will be markers showing where to go or what tanks are mission related so you know which ones you have to take out and where to go to advance. The game is pretty straight forward. There is also a battle royale mode where any tank can be used and you make custom teams, this might be kinda tricky if you cant read any Japanese, same with menus.

Some things of interest
• The special edition comes with a download code for Anchovy, but you wont be able to obtain the DLC on a non-Japanese PSN account.
• The special edition comes in a big box with lots of stuff including: posters of each school leader (including Anchovy ♥), billion different alternate game case designs, DVDs (probably region locked, I haven’t tried), and a book. I would put pictures of my copy but its easier to just use the promotional picture
• Of course try each tank to see what you prefer but I like tanks that have good speed. You need to get closer to the enemy to do more damage, better speed makes it easier to snake around the enemy and not get shot yourself.
• I translated some of the menus that aren’t self-explanatory in case you cant read them
メインメニュー= MAIN MENU
ストーリーモード= STORY MODE
ギャラリー = GALLERY
オプション = OPTION(S)

Battle Royale Menu
フリーバトル = FREE BATTLE
• When doing choices “はい” is yes, “いいえ” is no
• When doing the battle royale missions, the top team is your team, the bottom is the enemy team
• Game uses “O” to select and “X” to go back
• Alternate titles include:
– Girls und Panzer: Master the Tankery
– ガールズ&パンツァー 戦車道、極めます!
• Has the same music as the anime which makes it even more fun to play
• If you’re buying the special edition make sure you look well, I got mine for like $37 (brand new) but I’ve seen it listed for as much as $200, if you don’t see any in your price range just wait and check every week.

Criminal Girls: Invite Only

Criminal Girls: Invite Only is a PS Vita game that was originally released in Japan in 2013 then got localized in 2015. Since this game has been localized its available in English. The genre for this game is JRPG and its a very fun one.

The plot of this game is that you’re a new employee in Hell’s prison. Your job is to lead seven girls who died before they could repent their sins through reformation, which involves going through the different layers of hell fighting enemies and bosses along the way.

What catches people’s eye the most with this game is how the girls learn new skills. To learn new moves the girls need to be “motivated” which involves spanking them among other similar things while they’re in lewd poses, farther you go the more skin they show. Each set of new moves has a different outfit too which makes it even more fun, especially if its something that pertains to your interests. Sadly though, in the localization the game has been censored. There’s pink fog covering certain spots, usually their vagina region, and the voices have been removed. Despite this the game is very fun, but would be better uncensored.

This game’s battle system is rather unique. You first of all can have all the girls with you, and they all level pretty evenly. You can switch them out in battle as many times as you want. The way the moves are chosen are that your girls suggest them. Each time its your turn you get four choices chosen by the girls then you pick what you think is the best choice for your strategy. Some girls can learn joint moves where they attack together.

My waifu picks for this game are:

                                                              Shin <–
12321368_1781648432122000_3572278921165085921_nShin is my favorite girl from the game and one of my favorite girls in general. She’s a super cutie and I like her personality. She always wants to be the leader and is serious. There is a level in the game where you get to see the backstories of all the girls and learn more about them and how they got into Hell. I related with Shin’s backstory a lot which made me like her even more. Her attacks often include the other characters and some spells. She also attacks with cards which is adorable~

Alice –>
AliceAlice is visually more my type and she’s a super cutie too. I love lolis, especially ones that are curvy, seriously look at the hips on that girl~! She’s so small and cute. Her personality is very soft spoken and shy. She’s a very quiet girl, except for when she senses a spirit in need of help. She is synced to the spirit realm. Despite her appearance and extremely weak normal attack she can actually be the strongest character if used right and she always played a major part in my boss fight strategies. Her ultimate moves are crazy strong, especially if used on enemies weak against ice.

Some other things of interest

• If you plan on getting the platinum in the game you will need to knight every girl and see each ending. There will be a time when you can knight a girl, you can only do this with one girl. So when you get to this point make a save file for every girl so you can easily get all the trophies, or you will have to replay most of the game.
The game has multiple post-games, these are necessary to complete for the platinum.
• Sometimes you can trigger desired move suggestions by sending out the character that has the move. So if you aren’t getting a move you want return the character then send them back out. Or plan this ahead.
• Most of the trophies are from knighting and the different endings. Nothing is glitched when you only get a few trophies for most of the game.

Metropolismania 2

Metropolismania 2 is a game that was released in 2006 for PlayStation 2. This game is a city builder sim, but a very unique one. This game has been localized and is available in English.

This is one of my absolute favorite games and I can and have played it for hours, and sometimes days, on end. The graphics of the people in this game are very anime-like, especially your character if you make them a girl. I always make my character a girl and there’s a good amount of different hairstyles and faces to choose from. You can even unlock clothes if you’re lucky enough.

What makes this game unique from others in the genre is that its not in eagle eye view and you don’t handle city funding/taxes (but you do get a wage and have a budget). In this you control your character and actually run around the city you’re creating, interacting with the citizens and purchasing items from the stores. The goals for this game are mostly to reach a certain number of citizens. You get new residents in your phone and you can actually ask the residents of the city for more people.

This game gets generally negative reviews due to the difficulty of the game. Lots of people dive right in, build nilly willy then die a horrible death full of despair (fufufuuu). You have to plan an insane amount in this game. Residents will complain about their surroundings but its takes them quite some time to voice their concerns so build slowly and in ways where you can fix issues as they arise. There is no such thing as planning too much in this game. I even keep track of the ages of children to put them closest to the correct schools. If in doubt you can also put all the schools together then surround it with houses (and more things for citizens). If you plan greatly you’ll have a really fun time with this game if you like challenging city building sims.

Keep a notebook handy (oh yeah its one of those games) since when complaints arise you probably wont have the type of building you need. This means you got to ask around (so write down what you need) then someone will eventually give you someone who knows someone, then write down that person’s name then try to locate them. Sometimes the location they also say is easy and sometimes it isn’t, so its important to try to pay attention to where citizens are, especially bookstores since they tend to be very helpful.

This game has a large range of different types of buildings that can be in your city. This includes such things as maid cafes and very rare anime stores. I once had a city full of maid cafes and it was amazing. Asking people who may know others in the industry or people of interest is a good idea. I asked the maids to get more maids but when I asked the otaku of the city trying to get anime stores they didn’t know anybody and just wanted to play their eroge.

Some others things of interest
• There are some glitch characters, try to avoid them especially if they’re doing something like tending a field, they will crash your game. They have odd names like “Mbwwt”
• Giving people the melons as gifts almost always raises your friendship level well (this is important since you need to be friends to ask for new residents)
• The boss looks just like Hitler
• If you eat a ton then jump you go crazy high, this is not only comical but fun to run on top of buildings
• Plan out your city before you lay down anything, roads cant be deleted
• There will be some trial and error with figuring out the distances between different types of buildings (some things have to be close somethings have to be far and some things have to be at the perfect distance)
• You can get a house and unlock clothes but you’ll need to build the right stores (real estate offices, clothing stores, thrift stores, etc) then get lucky that they sell what you need and/or want. You’ll need a wardrobe to use the clothes you bought.
• You can invite people from your past cities
• Some buildings can be stacked, keep in mind which ones can stack to plan out your city better
• Old people love the parks
• You can unlock different music for the game
